Things began to awkwardly heat up when she bumps into him at a hardware store buying rope, which we can later only assume is for his… alternative sexual preferences. At this point in the film, Anna has been courting Christian Grey, a young attractive billionaire “entrepreneur” (we actually never really found out what he does and how he became a billionaire) who she was sent by her best friend to interview for a college newspaper. While this may sound like an unfair and pointless endeavor given the film’s overwhelmingly negative reception, it does present a wealth of gender and relationship stereotypes in a single, shameless package which demonstrates many of the implications and stereotypes found throughout mass media today.įor this analysis, we’ll take a look at one scene in particular. Now that we’ve had a year or so for the dust to settle, it’s time to take a closer look at the film rendition of Fifty Shades of Grey from a critical media perspective.
